The testing checklist
Before a review gets published, it has to clear every item here:
- Tool used for a minimum of two weeks on a real task — not a 10-minute demo click-through
- At least one original screenshot from our own account, not the vendor's marketing images
- At least one specific, non-obvious detail found during testing (a limitation, a workaround, a pricing gotcha the vendor doesn't advertise)
- Score justified in the text with reasoning, not just asserted as a number
- Pros and cons based on our own testing, not copied from the vendor's feature page
- Compared directly against at least one tool we've already tested in the same category
How we score
Every tool is scored out of 5 across four weighted areas:
- Core functionality (40%) — does it do the main job well, under real conditions?
- Ease of use (20%) — time to first useful result, quality of onboarding
- Value for price (25%) — what you get at each pricing tier relative to alternatives
- Support & reliability (15%) — response time when we've actually needed help, uptime/bugs encountered during testing
What disqualifies a tool from a "Best Of" list
We will not include a tool in a ranked "best of" article unless it has its own individually published, fully-tested review first. We also remove tools from "best of" lists if a later re-test reveals the product has meaningfully declined.
Editorial independence
Reviews are never paid for, and affiliate relationships never influence the score a tool receives. Where we do earn a commission on a link, it's disclosed — see our Affiliate Disclosure.
How often we update
Every published review is revisited at least once every 12 months regardless of ranking. Pricing or feature changes we notice sooner get updated within two weeks, with a visible update note at the top of the article.
Team note: this is a strong starting framework — adjust the weighting percentages and checklist items to match how your team actually works, then keep this page accurate as your process evolves. This page is one of the highest-trust pages on the whole site — link to it from every review.
